The Twitter Revolution

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few months, you have at least heard of Twitter, the newest online networking tool.  For those of you familiar with myspace or facebook, Twitter is essentially a scaled-down version of the two, allowing you to broadcast status updates to friends and followers without the lengthy profiles.  If you are sitting there totally confused, what Twitter does is it lets you tell everyone signed up to the program what you are doing, plan on doing, selling, etc. etc.

First of all, get past the silly name.  Twitter is a potentially powerful advertising and networking tool capable of reaching hundreds or thousands of clients and realtors.  Best of all, its free!

Twitter allows for thousands of people to “follow” your updates via Twitter directly or through emails, facebook links, and a host of other programs.  It is easy to use, even for those that are computer illiterate.  Go to twitter.com, sign up, create a simple profile, and tell the (Twitter) world what you have to say about your company.
Why use Twitter?  Several reasons.  In today’s struggling economy its important to push every dollar to the max.  Online networking, often overlooked or marginalized in the real estate market, offers a cheap and effective way to keep in touch with clients and colleagues.  Plus, your “followers” can provide instant feedback to your updates, giving you a unique insight into what your customers or colleagues  think of your business.

Additionally, Twitter allows for easy, direct contact with other real estate professionals in the U.S., Latin America, and the world.  Such a thorough connection will not only lead to information sharing, but can also present your company to a wider network base.

When starting out with Twitter its important to let your already established contacts know that you are “tweeting”.  Mention it briefly in your blog, newsletter, webpage, or whatever it is you use to communicate.  Kind of like this: You can follow the VivaReal Network at twitter.com/VivaReal.  Simple as that.
